Could willpower be a secular version of Faith? Interestingly, willpower is a tool of the self reliant. At 51, Iv'e learned that willpower is way too dependent on ones emotional, physical and psychological condition. All of which are inconsistent.

We shouldn't confuse the exercising of experience, expertise, and process knowledge with willpower. There is a big difference between influencing an outcome using time tested successful tools and willing an outcome to happen.

Persistance and "holding a course" are not the same as willpower unless they are being applied when all true evidence advises against them.
